There is a wonderful Yiddish word – “Ungepatchked”. It means a busy or overdone design.
But it’s so much more evocative than the English – as you hear the word, your body itself feels what is expressed, to its very Kishkes (that’s another nifty term).

A lot of the internet is Ungepatchked!
It is an all too common experience to be greeted with a slow loading splash page and then surf for several more pages “full of sound and fury signifying nothing”. And after wasting all that time, you still don’t know what they’re selling!
Worse yet! The site may require all sorts of “plug ins” to load properly – extra software that you’re not even sure you want in your computer!
Or, you hit a page which is so chuck full of images, sound, boxes of text in a variety of colors that you’re not sure where to look.

Let’s face it, a lot of Web site builders are more interested in playing with technology than focusing on the information needs of their client or the targeted audience – “Impress them with the glitz of a three-ring circus” is their plan. Never mind that the average computer will take half an hour to download the page.
